A chemical peel is an outpatient procedure that uses a special solution to lift away the upper skin layer. This is not the same technique as abrasive resurfacing. Chemical peels are popular because the removal of epidermis stimulates new tissue growth. In most cases, the newly formed skin that replaces the peeled layer is healthier, and the skin surface as a whole is more even-toned.
The amount of non-set wrinkling can also be reduced, giving the face a more youthful appearance. In addition, the stimulation of new tissue growth may result in an increase in collagen production. If you are concerned about the effects that aging has on your facial skin, we may be able to help by performing a superficial or medium-depth chemical peel.
How a Chemical Peel Can Help
Peels using a mild solution will affect only the uppermost skin layers. This is a suitable treatment for mild pigmentation changes in the skin, surface scarring and acne scars. Damage from overexposure to the sun, fine wrinkles and some age spots can be treated with a mild superficial peel procedure. Deeper peel treatments are performed when the problem involves thicker discolorations, precancerous lesions or moderate wrinkling.
Chemical peel treatments are rather gentle. The amount of the solution used is determined after a full examination of the face is performed. This allows us to observe the depth of the discolorations or scarring. Before we decide to perform a chemical peel treatment, we sit down with the client to discuss such things as preparation, post-treatment care and realistic results and expectations.
How a Chemical Peel is Performed
The solution is spread directly onto the face. It is allowed to set for a short period of time, and then it is wiped off. The upper level of skin is ultimately removed. The affected skin layer will eventually dry up and peel. New skin growth begins almost immediately. The regrowth and subsequent improvement in skin tone take about two months. A chemical peel can be repeated at regular intervals, but most clients find that the positive results can last for up to one year.
Benefits of a Chemical Peel
Since no surgery is involved, our clients need not worry about incision scars. Unlike dermal fillers that can produce bumpy, uneven texture, a chemical peel results in smooth skin across the entire treated region.
