It’s impossible to avoid, and it happens to everyone. Sooner or later, time, age, and the environment have an effect on our skin. The surface of our skin and especially the skin on our face is adversely affected by things outside of our control, like the sun, pollution, and other environmental elements. And before you know it, the signs are noticeable: dry, rough texture; age spots and other hyperpigmentation; fine lines and wrinkles; and scars from acne and other blemishes.
All of these can damage our skin and make us look tired, rough, uneven, and older than we would like. Sure, there are all those skin care products that claim to help, but even the best ones can only do so much. Sometimes, you just want more than at-home care can provide, but you don’t want to go all the way to invasive or surgical procedures.
At Facial Aesthetic Concepts, we have something that may be able to help deal with common skin problems due to aging and the environment: microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion is safe, simple, non-invasive and non-surgical. Done correctly at the hands of one of our skilled medical professionals, this technique can lessen the look of and even completely correct many common skin concerns. Microdermabrasion is also different from facial peels because it is non-chemical, which means no harsh gels and liquids on your face. It is an abrasive technique, but the irritation is minimal — that’s why it’s called “micro.”
In the simplest terms, microdermabrasion is a procedure that works by “sanding” the outer layer of your facial skin so that the fresher, newer skin beneath is revealed. This results in a smoother and more pleasing appearance that is free from some problems and vastly reduced in the look of other issues. Microdermabrasion can most commonly help:
- Improve and reduce the look of age spots and hyperpigmentation
- Deep cleanse the skin to remove blackheads and other blemishes
- Reduce the appearance of stretch marks (such as those that result from significant weight loss)
- Minimize fine lines and wrinkles
- Shrink the appearance of large pores
- Treat some forms of acne and acne scars
In certain cases, microdermabrasion can also help people who suffer from facial redness caused by rosacea, a common skin condition that affects around 14 million Americans. Plus having microdermabrasion can actually help stimulate and increase the production of your skin’s natural collagen, a protein that is responsible to keeping skin looking tight, toned, young, and fresh.
There are two common methods of performing microdermabrasion. The one that is most often used works rather like a gentle sander for your face. Your medical professional will use a special tool that spreads a spray of fine microcrystals onto the facial skin. Those crystals work to smooth the outer layers of skin and remove dead skin cells and other pollutants that may be causing some of the problems. The crystals and the “sanding” action also encourage the growth of new skin cells and the production of higher levels of collagen and elastin, all while a vacuum device gently sucks all the debris away.
A second form of microdermabrasion utilizes the technology of a diamond-tipped wand. This special wand does much the same thing that the microcrystals do, but because of the size and shape of the device, more precision can be used in areas that may need more attention. And just like with the first technique, there is that gentle vacuum to handle the debris,
