At Facial Aesthetic Concepts, we know that while many people consider the options they have to fight aging and other cosmetic issues, not everyone is ready for the commitment that surgical solutions require. We offer many non-invasive, non-surgical options that can help treat your concerns. One of these is Intense Pulsed Light Therapy,or IPL.
Also known as photofacial or photorejuvenation, IPL Therapy is a way to achieve excellent results for many common skin concerns without having to worry about post-treatment care. IPL uses pulses of light to concentrate treatment directly on the areas and problems that need improvement or correction, without any damage to surrounding skin. This means there is no downtime following treatment and little to no side effects.
The most common problems that IPL Therapy can help reduce or correct are redness from rosacea, sun damage such as age spots, large or visible pores, blemish scars, and fine lines and wrinkles. While this technique is not a replacement for more invasive options that can produce more dramatic results, it is an excellent option that will result in significant, visible improvement (generally after three to five sessions total). Plus, the heat generated during IPL Therapy works to stimulate the upper layers of your skin and increase the production of natural collagen — that means healthier, firmer, and younger-looking skin for you.
The process of IPL Therapy is very simple and is easily performed by one of our trained medical professionals right in any one of our three California offices. Once you have consulted with one of our doctors and determined that this is a good option for you, there is very little you need to do to prepare for your actual appointment. Basic preparation includes no sunbathing and discontinuing the use of any harsh skin care regimens (such as Retin-A, Vitamin C products, alpha hydroxy acids, and similar) for two weeks prior to treatment. It is preferred that you come to your appointment with fresh, clean skin — no makeup or foundation. If there is anything else you need to do, your doctor will make sure you are advised beforehand.
Because this type of therapy uses pulses of light, you will wear protective goggles during treatment and a cooling gel will be applied to your skin if needed. While the procedure is relatively painless, some people do experience mild discomfort during the pulses, like the snapping of a rubber band. Depending on the size of the area being treated and also whether it is your first appointment or one of your later ones, the process can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes — this will lessen as the areas of concern improve.
Post-treatment care is very simple and generally just means avoiding anything that can irritate your skin in the event that it feels tender. It may feel like a mild sunburn, so avoid the sun, very hot showers, and harsh skin care for a few days. The discomfort, if any, should dissipate in a matter of days.
We’d love to answer any questions you have about IPL Therapy or any of the other treatments and procedures we offer at Facial Aesthetic Concepts. Call one of our three offices today to set up an appointment or consultation so we can find the right option for your concerns.
