We expect to see puffy cheeks in infants. For most of us, that “baby face” look, caused by buccal fat in the cheeks, is diminished as we age over the next few years.
But some people retain much of that puffy-cheeked, baby-faced appearance as they enter adulthood. When that happens, many of them consider a buccal fat reduction procedure.
Buccal fat is one of several encapsulated fat compartments in the cheek that provide youthful fullness to our lower cheek. As we age, however, our facial skin and underlying soft tissues develop laxity, which allows the buccal fat to descend lower into the cheek. This descent produces fullness and more prominent jowls in the lower face.
Due to its location deep in the muscles of facial expression, buccal fat cannot be treated with liposuction or skin tightening treatments. Injectable fillers can be used to augment the jawline and cheek in the early stages of buccal fat descent, however, when fillers are inadequate, buccal fat reduction can be performed in combination with other procedures to reduce lower facial fullness and improve the cheek contour.
Buccal fat reduction can be performed through a small intra-oral incision where the fat is appropriately reduced to the desired volume. This advanced technique, when performed in experienced hands and combined with other procedures, restores the youthful contour to face for a natural aesthetically pleasing result. As with all procedures, a complete patient evaluation is needed to determine what procedures are most effective for the individual.
