HYPERBARIC OXYGEN (HBO) THERAPY IN PLASTIC SURGERY
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been used for many years and showed impressive results for various wound-healing applications. Burn victims, as well as patients with life threatening infections of the skin, bones and internal organs, have shown dramatic improvements with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are routinely used in patients with diabetes and circulation problems, and this has resulted in thousands of patients being spared unnecessary amputations.
Impressed by the dramatic results seen with HBO, our surgeons have begun integrating hyperbaric treatments with their surgeries at Facial Aesthetic Concepts. Our surgeons are focusing on more rapid recovery and less discomfort as those components are key elements to their patient’s satisfaction.
HOW DOES HYPERBARIC OXYGEN WORK?
Hyperbaric medicine, also known as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the medical use of oxygen at a higher than atmospheric pressure.
People want to know how HBO actually works and what it will do for them. 100% oxygen is breathed into the lungs and absorbed throughout the body. This raises the oxygen levels throughout the tissues over 1,000 times the normal level. The extra oxygen delivered to the tissues has a dramatic effect on improving healing, and cutting down on pain and swelling. HBO has also shown to improve brain function through the increase in circulation and helps in de-toxifying the body giving patients more energy. The bodies aged and damaged cells are restored by the oxygen. Because the cells improve in shape and structure patients have found that their hyperbaric treatments have improved the overall way they look and feel!
HEALING AFTER SURGERY
By using hyperbaric oxygen before and after cosmetic surgery you can reduce pain and swelling, improve circulation, speed up the recovery process and even improve results. Patients undergoing face lifts, eyelid and breast surgery, nasal reconstruction, abdominal surgery, chemical and laser peels, as well as liposuction have benefited from pre-op and post-op hyperbaric treatments.
At the start of the treatment, some patients experience a sensation similar to that felt while flying and/or landing in an airplane. As pressure builds, it is common to feel pressure in the ears. At the end of the treatment, as the pressure is released, the ears “pop” automatically. Most patients rest comfortably throughout treatment. Many read, sleep or listen to music.
