You may have heard people talking about microdermabrasion, either in conversations or on television, but did not completely understand what the term implied. If so, it might help by looking at the difference in dermabrasion and microdermabrasion. Both are ways of treating skin irregularities, but there is a fundamental difference in the way the two treatments are delivered.
Dermabrasion is done when the specialist uses an abrasive instrument to remove tissue from the outer layer of the skin by direct contact. This basically sands off the top layers of the skin. The healing process then replaces what was removed with new skin tissue, which is expected to be smoother and more normal-looking. It can be used on skin conditions that are severe, such as deep wrinkles and scars from accidents or diseases. Dermabrasion treatments can only be done on people with fair skin. If used on individuals with darker skin tones, places of inadequate pigmentation can develop.
Microdermabrasion, on the other hand, uses tiny crystals that are sprayed onto the skin with a special device. The device also has a suctioning feature that will gather up the abrasive along with the skin that is removed by it. Those undergoing treatment will wear protective glasses to keep the abrasive out of their eyes.
There are no toxic properties of the abrasive agent that is used, and no downtime is required. No anesthesia is needed prior to beginning the procedure. Following treatment, the skin may look pink, but this should diminish within approximately 24 hours.
Microdermabrasion is effective at removing things like fine wrinkles, dull skin and age spots. An advantage this treatment provides is that it can be successfully used on all skin types. The changes it makes are subtle and the person receiving the treatment will not end up with patches of skin that are lighter or darker in color.
Following treatment, it is recommended that moisturizing cream be applied afterwards. Also, if you use makeup, you should wait at least 24 hours before using it because some types are not good for the skin during this time.
